Chapter Twelve

They meandered in silence through the remains of the castle. Something other than this turmoil with Eva gnawed at Marcos. It finally came to him as he scanned their surroundings and focused on the abandoned hotel. The spirit of the boy on his base had pointed in this direction. He had thought the boy meant the castle, but he must have meant the hotel. That made more sense. Who better to know about a haunted location than a spirit?

He’d think about it later. He’d have to force himself to return to the grounds of the hotel. Even the idea made his skin prickle with goosebumps. Too many restless spirits roamed that godforsaken land. The spook factor crept under his skin, and he had to get away.

With only a few hours with Eva, he’d make the most of it before facing the unknown. “We said we’d go explore. Want to go up to Maeda Point?”

“The scuba spot?”

“Yeah, but it’s supposed to be really amazing. Thought we could check it out.”

On their drive north, he second-guessed all he’d revealed. He didn’t confide his feelings often and for good reason. He didn’t want to scare her off. She didn’t appear unnerved by his statements. In fact, her expression was more one of awe of their surroundings.

“You were right,” she remarked after they’d parked. “It’s breathtaking.” She scanned the beaches and cliffs, covering her eyes to block the sun, and turned to face him. “You’re not even looking around.”

She caught him staring at her. He covered it up quickly by scanning the coastline and the striking blue ocean and asked, “Do you scuba?”

“I haven’t.”

“It’s amazing. You can see so many fish. It’s an unbelievable world beneath the surface.”

“Colorful fish?”

“Dozens. Would you like to try it?” So much for backing off.

“Mmm, I’ll think about it.” Her serene face spread into a smile.

He fought the urge to take her hand as they walked the beach. He had to remain in control. They approached a cliff perched over the oceans, green growth clinging precariously off the side. Something at the top of the cliff captured his attention. He couldn’t see anything, but sensed the energy there and halted.

The air vibrated with swirling grays and white, barely visible against the backdrop of the blue sky. The mists slowed and shaped, transforming into the silhouette of a figure and then a fully-formed old man dressed in clothes from an earlier era. Marcos stared, open-mouthed as the old man fixed his ancient eyes on him. The spirit shook his head. What was he trying to communicate?

“Stay here, Eva.”

He raised his hand and hurried ahead, keeping his pace steady. As he approached, the man slowly faded. “Wait!” he called, but the spirit had vanished.

“Who are you talking to?” She followed after him.

“No one,” he said dismissively. “I thought I saw something.”

“Something or someone? You shouted at someone to wait.”

He wouldn’t tell her what he’d really seen. Too much had happened between them already, he didn’t need to add another complication with his supernatural quirk.
